New ventures

It’s been a couple of weeks now since we announced our acquisition of the Tea & Coffee Trade Journal and the Tea & Coffee World Cup Exhibition and Symposium, and it’s been non-stop ever since.

It’s a very exciting time in the office as we prepare to take the new magazine under our wing, a lot has been happening but I’m afraid I can’t tell all just yet. However, please sit tight and in the meantime keep your eyes peeled for our brand new advert for the Tea & Coffee World Cup Exhibition.

Our editors have been globe-trotting – Alex to the IMDA in Chicago, Katie to Valrhona in France, Suzanne to the Azores and Carly to Stuttgart. You can read about their trips in the upcoming issues. Katie is finishing off the June issue of Confectionery Production as we speak, expect features on cooking and depositing, flavours and colours as well as a product focus on hard candy and lollipops.

Preparations for the highly anticipated annual Supplier Profile issue of CanTech International have already begun. If you would like to be included please contact our group sales manager, Mark Neilson at mark@bellpublishing.com.

Bell Publishing acquires Tea & Coffee Trade Journal and Tea & Coffee World Cup Exhibition and Symposium

Bell Publishing Ltd (Gravesend, Kent, UK) has acquired Tea & Coffee Trade Journal from Lockwood Publications (New York, USA) for an undisclosed sum. The deal was signed just before this year’s Tea & Coffee World Cup, which took place in Kraków, Poland, 10-12 May.

The acquisition includes the trade magazine, website (www.teaandcoffee.net), and UKERS’ Tea & Coffee Global Directory & Buyers’ Guide along with the annual trade exhibition Tea & Coffee World Cup.

“We are delighted to acquire such a renowned and respected title. We always knew that tea and coffee was a great fit with our other titles—confectionery, dairy, food and packaging. We are looking forward to getting to know the industry, taking the title and exhibition forward and continuing their growth as part of our dynamic team,” said publishing director Neil McRitchie.

Bell Publishing publishes the titles Food & Drink Technology, Confectionery Production (founded in 1934), Dairy Industries International (founded in 1936) and CanTech International along with the website SweetsandSavourySnacksWorld.com. It also runs two events for the metal packaging industry, Asia CanTech and Euro CanTech.

“We’re excited to find a company like Bell Publishing that holds Tea & Coffee Trade Journal and Tea & Coffee World Cup in the high regard that we do. We expect it to be a smooth transition and believe the 115-year old brand has a strong future ahead,” said Robert Lockwood, president Lockwood Publications.

Lockwood Publications will retain ownership of Smokeshop, Tobacco International, Tobacco Products International and Smoke publications along with the respective websites, Tobacco International Buyers’ Guide/Directory and its annual exhibition, EuroTab.

All hands on deck

First of all, I’d like to apologise for being absent for a while but it’s been all hands on deck here in the office.

Since my last post we have said hello to two new members of staff and have yet another successful Euro CanTech show under our belt.

Katie Smith, our new editor for Confectionery Production, started in the office last week and has taken to the role like a duck to water. Preparations for her June issue are in full swing, if you have any editorial content you would like to submit, or just simply want to say hello please don’t hesitate to get in touch with her at katie@bellpublishing.com. She is getting out and about in the industry and hopes to meet many key industry figures in the next few months. Also joining us at Bell is Miranda McRitchie, our new events & marketing executive.

We are pleased to report that Euro CanTech 2016 went off without a hitch last month in Berlin, with Ball scooping the Supreme Award for its innovative Strawster design – find out more here. The team would like to thank everyone who attended and made it undoubtedly our best show to date.

We have also recently announced that the Hilton Kuala Lumpur will be the venue for this year’s Asia CanTech conference on 7-9 November. Lots of news will be heading your way about the event very soon so be sure to keep tabs on the website for updates.

Successful shows

We here at Bell have got off to a flying start with trade show season – ProSweets/ISM in Cologne and the Aerosol Forum in Paris were both a great success.

Our editors have been busy back in the office writing up all the industry news from the events. For all the latest from ProSweets be sure to take a look at the March issues of Confectionery Production and Food and Drink Technology, and for aerosol news the March issue of CanTech International.

The April issue of CanTech is sure to be a packed one, as it’s the official Euro CanTech show issue. It will be filled with all the latest news including the confirmation that Collin Gillis, president of Ball Packaging Europe, will open the Berlin conference.

I, on the otherhand, survived my first overseas business trip to Sweden to visit Tetra Pak. I must give a huge thank you to them for their hospitality throughout the overnight stay. The day itself was a very interesting one, and I was given the opportunity to meet and chat to senior members of the team as well as learn how Tetra Pak values sustainability. For a report on the trip, take a look at the March issue of Food and Drink Technology.

Last week, I was given yet another great opportunity to attend the official unveiling of Corbion Purac’s new R&D and applications centre in the Netherlands on behalf of Confectionery Production. I was given a tour of all the new facilities, discovering all the latest confectionery ingredients innovations. Trade show season

The next couple of weeks see the Spring trade show season really getting underway. This weekend ProSweets (31 January – 3 February) kicks off in Cologne with a lot of our team in attendance. Along with ISM, the shows cover the entire supply spectrum of the confectionery and snack industry all under one roof, so there will be plenty to see.

Joining the team in Cologne is our new group sales manager, Mark Neilson, who will be on our stand H078 in hall 10.1, so please do come and say hello. For those who remember the Morgan 3 Wheeler on our stand last year, there is a new vehicle for you to admire – like the Morgan it has three wheels and is very eye-catching! Photos to follow next week.

Next week also sees our CanTech International team travelling to Paris for the Aerosol Forum (3-4 February). The exhibition brings together experts from leading international brands and key suppliers in the aerosol technologies, components, dispensing systems and packaging industry. With over 350 exhibitors, there will be a lot for our editor, Alex Fordham to get his teeth stuck into.

Alongside them, I will be embarking upon my first overseas trip to Sweden to attend Tetra Pak’s sustainability press trip on behalf of Food and Drink Technology. I’m very much looking forward to representing the company, so please do check back next week to see how I got on. Happy new year

Hope you all had a great Christmas and a happy new year!

It’s been a busy first week back in the office getting back into the swing of things. The December/January 2016 edition of Food and Technology is out now and includes show coverage of ProSweets 2016, which is being hosted in Cologne (31 January – 3 February). Please take a closer look at the issue* here.

The show is the biggest suppier fair for the confectionery industry, and runs alongside ISM, billed as the world’s biggest trade fair for sweets and snacks. We will be on stand H078 at ProSweets with Confectionery Production alongside Food and Drink Technology, so please do come over and say hello if you’re coming to Cologne.

Christmas festivities

Last week I attended two trips in London: the ceremony of Christmas cheeses and the Anaerobic Digestion & Bioresources Digestion (ADBA) National Conference 2015.

The ceremony of Christmas cheeses was held at The Royal Hospital Chelsea. The day involved a ceremonial cheese cutting, a performance from popular TV show Britain’s Got Talent opera star Charlotte Jaconelli and a cheese filled luncheon.

It was a great privilege to speak to the Chelsea Pensioners throughout the day, many of whom were overwhelmed with the response from guests. Read about the day in more detail here.

The ADBA conference provided an insight into the lastest developments in anaerobic digestion for the dairy industry and the possible issues it faces in the future. Please be sure to take a look at the January issue of Dairy Industries International for a full report.

Looking to the future

This week I attended Food Matters Live at The Excel Centre in London with Carly, the editor of Food and Drink Technology.

I spent a busy day talking to budding entrepreneurs about their new products and attending some very interesting seminars hosted by a panel of experts.

What I enjoyed most about the day was introducing myself to some of the companies that I regularly liaise with back in the office – it was great to meet people face to face and strengthen our working relationships.

One particular seminar I attended, ‘New markets, new diets: what’s the future for the global health and well being market?’ was fascinating and I will be reporting on the findings in the next issue of Food and Drink Technology.

This month we said goodbye to Richard Piper, our CanTech International editor who is moving on to pursue new challenges. We wish him well for the future. You can take a look at the November issue of CanTech International here, which includes all the Asia CanTech award winners, as well as a review of this year’s successful conference and exhibition.

Also, this week we were excited to announce that Kuala Lumpur is the location for Asia CanTech 2016, read more about it here. As well as this, we announced some brand new features for next year’s Euro CanTech 2016 being held in Berlin in April, which can be seen here.

Bangkok success

Asia CanTech 2015 is officially over for another year, and we are happy to say it ran without a hitch.

It was great to hear that so many new and familiar faces were seen over the course of the event, so a big thank you from us to all those who attended. The event kicked off with afternoon registration, followed by a networking buffet dinner held on the riverside terrace at the hotel.

Day two of the conference welcomed the first keynote speaker of the event, John Bigley, managing director of Jamestrong Packaging – Australia and New Zealand. During his talk Jamestrong announced that it will be installing an eight-colour decorating line at its Milperra (NSW, Australia) – for the full story please click here. The highly anticipated Asia CanTech awards filled the rest of the evening; and all of the winners can be seen here.

Commenting on the success of the event, Megan Freeman, our events manager, says, “We have just returned from yet another successful Asia CanTech conference in Bangkok, Thailand. With 300+ attendees, the conference, exhibition room and tabletop stands looked fantastic across the board.

“It was great to see new and familiar faces gathering together from around the industry. Thank you once again for your support at Asia CanTech 2015, the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and we are pleased that all of you found it so valuable. The conference presentations will be available to download on our website this week.

“I look forward to seeing you all again next year at Euro CanTech 2016 and Asia CanTech 2016 and as always we will be asking for your input on location.”

Back here in the office, the November issue of Dairy Industries is hot off the press. This month’s issue contains a feature focus on China, investigating the new advertising law that will challenge the country’s dairy sector.

The next couple of months also see a number of important trade shows, including Brau Beviale, Food Matters Live and Food Ingredients Europe. For all the latest news from these events be sure to keep an eye out across the websites.

Asia CanTech countdown

With just days left until the eagerly awaited Asia CanTech 2015 our event team are finishing off the final preparations here in the office before travelling to Thailand.

Euro CanTech site goes live!

We are very excited to announce that we have gone live with our brand new Euro CanTech website, bringing you all the latest news about our annual Euro CanTech conference and exhibition taking place in Berlin, Germany 4-6 April 2016.

Since my last blog, a lot of the Bell team have attended PPMA in Birmingham. Three of our editors from Food & Drink Technology, Confectionery Production and Dairy Industries attended the show across the three day event, accompanied by our sales team. The exhibition celebrated its 27th year and was highly focused on machinery allowing access to the most senior decision makers. Our stand featuring the three-wheeler Morgan was very popular and became a talking-point of the show!

Be sure to take a look at our editors’ blogs in the coming weeks to hear all about it, but in the main time Suzanne discusses the hot topics of debate from the World Dairy Summit in Lithuania and Carly talks us through the latest updates on the horsemeat scandal from ABC’s Fighting Food Fraud event in their latest blog entries.

Trade show introductions

So, I was lucky enough to attend my first trade show last week, Packaging Innovations at Olympia in London. Almost instantly after stepping through the entrance I was greeted with an array of exhibitors all showcasing their new products and innovations.

Luckily I was accompanied by our editors Richard and Carly, trade show veterans who showed me the ropes. I spent time visiting a number of booths talking to people and introducing myself, and it was interesting to find out more about the businesses that I write about on a daily basis.

One of those in particular was Crown, who informed us of their most recent innovations in package design, from adding LED lighting to packaging, to interactive GiftTag technology. Find out more about it here.

The trip was worthwhile and acted as a great introduction in terms of really getting to grips with my role as web editor. And one thing I certainly took away from the day is the importance of networking. Meeting the people I liaise with regularly should enable me to strengthen my business relationships and ultimately my skills as a journalist.

Busy week for our editors…

This month is a particularly busy one for all of our editors here at Bell Publishing, with the office feeling a lot emptier than usual as they attend some of this year’s most important events.

Carly, editor of Food and Drink Technology, has a very busy schedule this week with four different events to attend. She has been in Munich for the past two days at iba, the world’s leading trade fair for bakery, confectionery and snacks. She also has RWM, Packaging Innovations and Fighting Food Fraud all penned into her diary for the rest of the week travelling all over the country. Be sure to check our Twitter handle @foodanddrinktec for updates from the shows.

Jetting off in a completely different direction is Suzanne, editor of Dairy Industries International who flew to Chicago on Sunday for the International Dairy Show. Here she will have exclusive access to new products, technology and machines. If you’re not in the US Suzanne’s blog next week and the show review will be sure to tell you all about it – so stay tuned!

Although he’s in the office, Richard, our CanTech editor is currently breathing a sigh of relief after his whopping 114 page Supplier Profile issue has finally been published. We had a delivery of this month’s issue into the office yesterday and it’s definitely one not to be missed, so suscribe here. Also bear in mind that it isn’t long till our annual conference Asia CanTech and the award entries are still open until 25 September. Euro CanTech 2015 early bird discount

With the team currently in Bangkok at the busy Asia CanTech show, a reminder that the early bird discounts for Euro CanTech are only available until 31 October. Book now to take advantage of the discount.

In Bangkok there’s been a growing interest in the Barcelona event, with can makers and suppliers from all over the world expressing their interest in attending next March. The all-inclusive format, giving so many opportunities for networking between the can makers and suppliers, is very well suited to the Hotel Arts’ excellent facilities. We feel sure it’s going to be a successful show.

Asia CanTech exhibitors area now full

Asia CanTech is proving more popular than ever this year, with can makers, suppliers and fillers signing up to register as the event gets ever nearer. There are now nearly 70 exhibitors in the tabletop exhibit area, which is now full.

Bell Publishing at the PPMA show

We are gearing up to exhibit at the PPMA Show, ‘The Complete Production Line Event’, which is taking place at the NEC Birmingham, 30 September to 2 October.

The UK’s largest Processing and Packaging Machinery Exhibition, with over 300 exhibitors and more than 8,000 visitors, the event showcases the latest technology from machinery, industrial robot and automation technology to the machine vision solutions.
