Winners of AsiaCanTech Awards

The standard of entries (of which there were many) to this year’s awards was superb – which meant that our judgeshad their toughest job to date. But after much deliberation, they reached a unanimous decision in each of the ninecategories.
Supreme Winner
The winner of the CanTech International supreme award winner was named as Kian Joo. It received the ultimate accolade for its Timor Gardens can – manufactured for halal apricot jam and chocolate cream cookies – after judges declared the product:
“A visual feast of can making and decoration”.
Closures - Kian Joo
Kian Joo Can picked up this award for its Pierce-Thru-Tab, complete with a permanent marking which can be in the form of logos, numbers or symbols to upscale brands where product differentiation is key. The coloured tab can also be used as a promotional tool in recycling and redemption programmes.
Innovation - Crown Asia Pacific
The SuperEnd beverage can end scooped this award for Crown Asia Pacific Holdings. The geometry of this patented end reduces metal use by ten per cent, while improving end performance.
To date, more than 150 billion SuperEnd ends have been sold worldwide, saving over 37,000 metric tones of aluminium. “This technology has also saved over 300,000mt of greenhouse gases, and 600mt of organic coatings,” reveals Gary Fishlock, Crown Asia Pacific’s vice president, manufacturing.
General Line - Hindustan Tin Works
Hindustan Tin Works tookthe honours in this category for its Nestlé Milo (a malt and milk chocolate energy drink)can. According to the judges: “Excellent decoration and a printed lid make it a stand-out package.”
Beverage three-piece - O.R.G.
First prize for beverage three-piece went to China’s O.R.G.
for its 0.14mm ‘corrugated’ Dynamic Beverage Can. Made of lightweight, energy-saving DR tinplate, the can has a unique beading and four-necked structural design for added strength. “This product is both user-friendly and environmentally
friendly,” says a spokesman for O.R.G.
Food three-piece - O.R.G.
O.R.G. picked up this award for its Anti-Counterfeiting Milk Powder Can. The can earned its name as a result of advanced printing techniques – including hybrid screening, embossment, microform characters and invisible characters – and is clearly a valued and vital part of this market.
Beverage two-piece - Ball Asia Pacific
This award went to Ball for its stunning Budweiser beer can,
which was specially created for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China. The can’s finely detailed printing is enhanced by a metallic background colour and fluted body.
Food two piece - Kian Joo
Kian Joo landed first prize in this category with its lightweight two-piece DWI steel can. The 300mm x 402mm can eliminates the need for one end closure with no side and bottom seam. It is produced using the MicroFlex can making system in partnership with OmniTech International.

Decorative Speciality - Kian Joo
The decorative speciality award went to Kian Joo Can for its Timor Garden can. The stunning appearance of the curvaceous can is the result of conventional two-colour metal printing with FM screening, creating vibrant, eye-catching colours.

The best of the rest
Obviously, not every can or canmaker could win an award, but that’s not to say that we didn’t appreciate the quality of all the entries. So here we bring you a round up of the best of the rest....

All the candidates for this year's awards
were much appreciated and CanTech International looks forward to an even
